Mumbai International Film Festival: 18th Edition Promises Cinematic Splendor Across Five Cities

The much-anticipated 18th edition of the Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF) for short films, documentaries, and animation films is set to kick off, promising a week-long celebration of cinematic excellence that will captivate audiences and industry professionals alike.

In a curtain-raiser press conference, Shri Sanjay Jaju, Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, highlighted the festival's goal to not only promote cinema but also reflect on socio-economic issues and guide policymakers towards solutions. He emphasized the growing market for documentary and short films, noting the genre’s power to inform, inspire, introspect, and entertain, with a global industry worth $16 billion.

This year’s MIFF will feature 314 films from 59 countries in 61 languages, including 8 world premieres, 5 international premieres, 18 Asia premieres, and 21 India premieres. Shri Jaju also announced the introduction of the first-ever Doc Film Bazaar, a marketplace for independent filmmakers to find buyers, sponsors, and collaborators.

For the first time, MIFF will host screenings and red carpet events simultaneously in five cities: Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Pune, and Delhi, bringing world-class cinema closer to film enthusiasts across India. Additionally, the festival will showcase special films for persons with disabilities in partnership with the NGO SVAYAM, making all venues fully accessible.

Highlighting India’s advancements in the Animation and VFX industry, Shri Jaju noted that characters like Chota Bheem and Chacha Choudhary have achieved global recognition, demonstrating the universal appeal of Indian stories. The festival will also feature a Midfest Film, "The Commandant's Shadow," directed by Daniela Volker.

In a nod to cultural exchange, the Government of Sri Lanka will perform at the opening ceremony, while the Government of Argentina will showcase their talents at the closing ceremony.

Shri Jaju also emphasized the importance of nurturing future filmmakers by inviting students from premier film institutes like FTII, SRFTI, and IIMC to immerse themselves in the festival, learn from industry leaders, and network with peers. The opening ceremony will feature the FTII student short film “Sunflowers were the first ones to know,” which won accolades at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.

The festival promises to fuel India’s soft power with the participation of imaginative creators from across the nation. MIFF 2024 is set to be a landmark event, celebrating the diversity and creativity of filmmakers from around the world.
